A sample data model: In practical terms, a "data model" is an architectural diagram for a database. It shows how the database is organized (tables, data elements, and relationships), and it also shows how the database relates ("maps") to the outside world. Data modeling has rapidly become a mature and powerful discipline. There are now libraries of "universal data models" which capture the classic underlying structures of common business functions. Data modeling is remarkably good at revealing the "bone structure" of a business - it discloses unnoticed relationships as well as structural defects in business operations. Properly modeled systems tend to last for a long time. Any consumer of database/financial systems should know what a data model is and what one looks like. The above link shows a sample a data model for a healthcare delivery system. At RDIC we do data modeling constantly. Call us for more information.
